The Teaching Assistant certificate provides an opportunity for teaching assistants and other individuals interested in childhood education to begin their higher education in a gradual and supportive manner and to meet the new state and/or federal requirements. For some individuals, this will be the first step in a process for obtaining a baccalaureate degree and teaching certification. Upon completion of this proposed Certificate Program, students will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of a range of issues in the field of public education in grades K-12.
  • Have information regarding teacher preparation and certification issues so that they will know what career options they have, and what the routes are in pursuing those options.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic information, concepts and principles in the field of psychology, especially as they pertain to the education of young children.
  • Demonstrate college-level competence in the area of critical reading and writing.
  • Demonstrate the ability to successfully complete college-level work in an area of concentration.

Minimum Total Credits: 18
