The Liberal Arts & Sciences/Mathematics and Science program leads to the Associate in Science (A.S.) degree. This program, with an emphasis on mathematics, science, or both, parallels the first two years of course content for the degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. Qualified graduates of this program usually continue their studies at four-year colleges and universities, where, depending on the courses taken during their time here, they may meet the entry requirements for baccalaureate programs in mathematics, sciences (such as chemistry, biology, physics), and environmental science and forestry.
The distribution of courses to meet the requirements for the A.S. degree varies depending on the student’s interests, and is given below. It is very important that a student review the requirements for the first two years of any colleges to which he or she might transfer. Course selection can then be made with advice from a counselor in the area of the student’s interest.
A transfer chart for this program, available online on the College Web site (sunywcc.edu), indicates the recommended courses for students planning to transfer to a four-year college in a specific major after completion of the program in Liberal Arts/Mathematics & Science.

Core Requirements - Credit Hours: 33
Degree Requirements - Credit Hours: 31
Students planning to transfer to a Math/Science degree program at a four-year college or university should follow these degree requirements:
- Additional Electives in Humanities, English or Communications - Credit Hours 3
- Additional Electives in Behavioral/Social Science - Credit Hours 6
- Additional Mathematics* or Science** - Credit Hours 8
- Electives - Credit Hours 14
Core and Degree Requirement Note(s)
* Required Mathematics: MATH 181, 191 Calculus I & II are often required for science/math transfer programs. MATH 230 Calculus III and MATH 240 Differential Equations also are acceptable. MATH 135 College Algebra with Trigonometry, followed by MATH 161 Precalculus, could be taken as a sequence for average math students. Pharmacy transfer students must take MATH 161 Precalculus and MATH 181 Calculus I or higher. College Algebra, MATH 116 Development of Math Thought, MATH 111 Finite Math, and MATH 140 Statistics are not acceptable for the LA/MS math requirement. They count toward graduation requirements and can be taken as electives.
** Required Science: BIOL 115, 117 General Biology I & II, PHYSC 111, 112 College Physics I & II (or higher), and CHEM 107, 111 Inorganic Chemistry I & II are most generally accepted or required in transfer. Pharmacy and Medical Technology transfer students must take CHEM 107, 111 Inorganic Chemistry I & II as the core sciences in their first year, as they are prerequisites for second-year courses. Other science and math courses may be allowed to satisfy degree requirements at the discretion of the Curriculum Chair or may be taken as electives. Advice for Math/Science Transfer Students
Mathematics/science students should follow these guidelines when selecting classes:
- Begin with the highest-level college mathematics course for which high school has prepared you; lowest level acceptabel for this degree: MATH 135 - College Algebra w Trigonometry; followed by MATH 161 - Precalculus.
- Take only science courses that require a laboratory and are offered in a two-semester sequence; BIOL 115/117 - General Biology I & II; PHYSC - College Physics I & II (or higher), and CHEM 107/111 - Inorganic Chemistry I & II.
- Take the first and second parts of two-part courses in the correct sequence.
The specific courses needed to meet the degree requirements depend on the career and transfer goals of the individual student. There are several science and mathematics courses which are intended for the non-mathematics/science major and do not fulfill the science curriculum. Students should seek advice from a college counselor or Curriculum Chair on what courses do and do not fulfill requirements. Students planning to transfer to a four-year college in a specific major (biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics) after completion of our program in Liberal Arts and Sciences/Mathematics and Science should choose elective courses in math and science from those listed on the Transfer Chart.
Minimum Total Credits: 64
