In New York State, a paramedic is the most advanced technician providing pre-hospital emergency care. Paramedic students build upon the foundation of their basic EMT certification and are prepared for positions in the pre-hospital environment.
The course work will consist of classroom sessions as well as laboratory sessions, and clinical and field internship components. A variety of hospital and paramedic ALS (Advanced Life Support) agencies are utilized throughout the educational experience.
The Emergency Medical Technician–Paramedic certificate program consists of two summer sessions (Anatomy and Physiology I & II) and two semesters. Students are required to purchase lab coats and supply their own transportation. Students are also required to pay an annual malpractice insurance fee.
Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded a certificate in Emergency Medical Technician–Paramedic, and become eligible for NYS Department of Health, Bureau of EMS certification as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician–Paramedic.
