The Environmental Science A.S. degree is designed for transfer and parallels the first two years of course content for Environmental Science Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degrees. Enrolled students will establish a foundation of biological, environmental and chemical sciences, and mathematics. Westchester Community College has established transfer agreements with a number of colleges and universities. Students who plan their programs carefully will receive full transfer credit at these institutions and will advance to the Bachelor’s degree with an additional two years of full time study.
Upon completion of this program students will:
- Students will be able to transfer to a Baccalaureate program to pursue a degree in Environmental Science and ultimately work in sustainability-related careers in government, public administration, education and public health.
- Students will be able to evaluate problems with an environmental perspective, play a part in future environmental, social, and economic decisions within Westchester County and beyond and become better Earth citizens.
- Students will illustrate the use of the scientific method of inquiry and analysis to better understand nature, our impact on it and how applied science, technology and public policies may foster sustainable global development.
- Students will characterize the nature of the biosphere, geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere. They will be able to explain common human impacts on each and how sustainability might be achieved.
Completion of this degree will give students a thorough understanding of concepts associated with sustainability, global climate change, ecosystem protection, natural resource management, and environmental policy and protection.
Qualified graduates of this program are likely to continue their studies at four-year colleges and universities where they may meet the entry requirements for baccalaureate programs in environmental science and related curricula.
Completion of the Environmental Science A.S. degree, and continuation through transfer, qualifies the graduate for careers in conservation, environmental science, “green” energy, environmental engineering as well as environmental education.
