Program Description
The growing public interest in nutrition has greatly expanded job opportunities in the field of foods, nutrition, and dietetics. Today, professional nutritionists and registered dietitians are employed in wellness and physical fitness centers, health care facilities, public health agencies, childcare centers, schools, food industries, and as consultants in a variety of settings.
The Associate in Science in Foods and Nutrition degree program prepares students to transfer from Westchester Community College into a baccalaureate program with an area of specialization in nutrition and/or dietetics. The curriculum follows the academic requirements for DPD’s of the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition & Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics (AND).
The program combines the basics of nutrition care with the science and liberal arts courses necessary for transfer to a four-year college or university. By choosing their courses carefully, most of our graduates are able to transfer and complete their studies in two additional years. Westchester Community College has transfer agreements with many colleges and universities.
To maximize success in transferring to a four-year institution, a minimum grade of “C” is needed in all courses. To transfer to a SUNY school, an additional course in American History, Western Civilization or another World Civilization course is required.
Students interested in working as dietetic technicians immediately upon graduation from Westchester Community College should take the A.A.S. in Dietetic Technology (Nutrition Care).
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate nutrition information accurately and effectively.
- Demonstrate the ability to provide comprehensive nutrition care based on accurate and complete assessment, careful planning and recognition of resource limitations.
- Demonstrate the ability to use efficiently and effectively the techniques and tools for managing food service systems.

Required Screening
Students admitted into this program must complete, at their own expense, a successful criminal background check and drug screening prior to beginning clinical courses. Please consult the curriculum chair of your program for additional details regarding the timetable and procedure for completing these requirements.
