A Note about Program Requirements

The requirements listed below are for students entering into this program in Fall 2016. Students who entered the program during a prior semester will find their specific requirements listed in the Catalog under which they entered. Archived Catalogs are accessible through the dropdown menu above.

Program Description

This program is for the student who wishes to enter the field of teaching grades 2 through 6. The program is based on the prescribed course of study universally recognized across the State University of New York to enable transfer to classroom teaching programs at baccalaureate campuses with New York State teacher certification authority.

The Program is designed to provide the student with a solid foundation in the Liberal Arts, while introducing the student to the professional study of education. Students are encouraged to select an appropriate concentration from either English or History. The concentration becomes the student’s major upon transfer into a four-year teacher certification program.

Program Notes

To ensure adequate preparation and smooth transfer, students will:

  • Complete ENG 101 - Writing and Research  with a grade of “C” or above before enrolling in INTER 101 - Introduction To Schools and Teaching  .
  • Be formally admitted into the Teacher Education Transfer Program only after completing two semesters and 25 to 30 credits.
  • Have earned an overall GPA of 2.75 and a 3.0 in both Pedagogical Core courses. This GPA is higher than the college’s standard requirement for graduation and is dictated by certification requirements.
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.75 or above to continue in the Teacher Preparation Transfer Program.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of a broad range of content areas that will enable them to transfer into a four-year teacher certification program in elementary education.
  2. Demonstrate the capacity for critical thinking, research, information processing and problem-solving as part of their study of these content areas.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of general psychology and developmental psychology necessary for further study of curriculum and instruction in a teacher certification program in elementary education.
