Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree Defined
The purpose of the A.A.S. is to be fully trained for immediate employment upon graduation. Students who opt to continue on to pursue higher levels of education are encouraged to check with the receiving institution regarding transferability of credits. Program Description
The two-year Associate Degree in Nursing program (ADN) prepares students for entry into the field of professional nursing. Graduates are prepared to provide bedside and related specialized nursing care in hospitals, homes, clinics, and long-term care facilities. Upon successful completion of the nursing program, graduates are eligible for licensure as Registered Professional Nurses. Advanced placement in the nursing curriculum is available for Licensed Practical Nurses.

Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:

Nursing Admissions Requirements and Steps
Step 1: Verify Course Work Required
The ATI TEAS Exam is a required step in the Nursing Program admissions process. Prior to registering for exam, prospective students must have the following requirements completed:
- Three years of high school Biology and Chemistry (with labs), along with two years of high school math including Algebra are required. If the student does not have proof of high school courses, equivalent college-level coursework must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.
- Westchester Community College placement tests and any necessary remedial coursework in reading, writing and mathematics (or college-level English and Math coursework completed with a grade of “C” or better) must be completed. To complete the placements tests, contact the WCC Testing Center after applying to the college (see below).

- Once accepted to the college and all pre-requisites are complete, students must take the ATI TEAS Exam to be considered for the Nursing Program.
- Contact the Office of Admissions located on the 2nd floor of the Administration Building at admissions@sunywcc.edu or 914-606-6735 for information about ATI TEAS Exam registration.
- Students interested in applying to the Nursing program are strongly encouraged to attend a Nursing Information Session for detailed information. Please visit www.sunywcc.edu/nursinginfo for dates, times, and location.
TEAS Exam Update: Effective August 31, 2016 ATI will be administering a new version of the exam called the ATI TEAS. The TEAS V will no longer be given. Study manuals for the sixth edition are available at the college bookstore or through the ATI online store.

Additional Program Notes:
See Student Handbook for specific policies which include:
- In order to continue in the program, students in the nursing curriculum must earn a minimum grade of “C” in each non-nursing course. Each nursing course in the curriculum must be passed with a minimum grade of “C+”. A minimum GPA of 2.0 must be attained at the end of each semester to remain in the program and for graduation.
- Students in semester 1 must successfully pass the NURSE 102 Dosage Calculations for Nurses Course with a grade of “C+” or better in order to progress to semester 2. Also in semester 1, students must pass a mid-semester Dosage Calculations exam with a score of 90% after two attempts in order to administer medications in the clinical setting. During the first half of semesters 2, 3 and 4, a test will be administered in solving problems in “Dosages and Solutions of Medications.” In order to continue in the program, students must pass the test with a score of 90% in ADN 131 ADN-Nursing 2, Mental Health Nursing/Maternity Nursing (and Lab, and Clinical Study) and 95% in ADN 221 ADN-Nursing 3 (and Lab, and Clinical Study) and ADN 231 ADN-Nursing 4 (and Clinical Study) on two attempts.
- ADN 131 ADN-Nursing 2, Mental Health Nursing/Maternity Nursing (and Lab, and Clinical Study) has two components:
ADN 2 (A) Parental-Child Health
ADN 2 (B) Mental Health Nursing
Each course must be passed with a minimum grade of “C+” to progress to ADN 221 ADN-Nursing 3 (and Lab, and Clinical Study) .
- Students who fail a semester or who withdraw from the program will be given consideration by the faculty for one more opportunity to complete the program.
Health Requirements
Prior to admission to the program, each student will submit, to the college health office, the results of a physical examination, laboratory tests, and documentation on forms provided by the college. Other requirements include background checks and drug screenings.
Required Screening
Students admitted into this program must complete, at their own expense, a successful criminal background check and drug screening prior to beginning clinical courses. Please consult the curriculum chair of your program for additional details regarding the timetable and procedure for completing these requirements.
CPR Certification
The student must have 2-year certification in a CPR Health Provider Course upon entrance into the program. The student is responsible for renewing the CPR certification if it expires during the time in the program. Please see the Curriculum Chairperson for a list of resources for CPR courses.
Clinical Practice
Clinical practice is an integral part of all nursing courses. Therefore, attendance at all clinical laboratory sessions is expected. A student who has had two or more absences must appear before the faculty to determine appropriate action, which may include grade reduction or dismissal from the program. Transportation to clinical agencies is the responsibility of the student. Malpractice insurance must be carried by all students throughout the program. (See Financial Information, Fees. )
Uniforms
School uniforms are worn in the clinical area and must be purchased by the student.
