Program Description

The Networking A.A.S. degree prepares students for work in the field of computer networking. Students completing the degree are qualified for entry-level career opportunities in the expanding field of building and maintaining computer networks.

The program teaches students the information and communication technology (ICT) skills required to design, install, and manage networks. Students learn networking based on technology, covering networking concepts using a top-down, theoretical, and integrated approach – from network applications to the network protocols and services provided to those applications by the lower layers of the network. Students also become competent in configuring switches and routers for both LAN and WAN implementations. Other topics of study include network management, learning how to design and apply Access Control Lists and apply concepts relating to network security, maintenance, trouble shooting, and upgrading of facilities. Basic concepts of computer programming and IT essentials are learned, and students acquire a working knowledge of the Linux operating system. In addition, upon completion of of certain courses, students are prepared to take industry standard certifications such as CompTIA’s A+, Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT), Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA), CCNA Voice, and CCNA Security examinations.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:

  1. Demonstrate the ability to design and maintain secure, voice, video, and data networks.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to implement and configure networked devices.
  3. Demonstrate the skills necessary to administer and monitor networks.
  4. Exhibit mastery of problem-solving skills necessary for troubleshooting networks.

Note: This program has general education requirements that transfer to a four-year degree.
