Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degree Defined
The purpose of the A.A.S. is to be fully trained for immediate employment upon graduation. Students who opt to continue on to pursue higher levels of education are encouraged to check with the receiving institution regarding transferability of credits. Program Description
The Energy Systems associate degree program prepares graduates for entry-level positions in energy generation, transmission and distribution. The curriculum was developed in conjunction with the New York Power Authority, Entergy and the Consolidated Edison Company to answer a critical need for trained technicians in the region.
Students will acquire the background and skills required for a technical career in the fields of gas, fossil, nuclear, and hydro-electric power, as well as the appropriate communication, math and science skills that employers seek. Through additional elective courses, students may explore a variety of specialties or focus on one. Career options include: Plant Operators, Chemistry Technician, Radiation Protection Technician, Electrical Maintenance Technician, Instrument & Controls Technician, Mechanical Maintenance Technician, Gas Field Technicians, Systems Protection Control Technicians, and Meter Technicians.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:
- Demonstrate understanding of the structure of the energy industry and current developments, including technological trends.
- Demonstrate the technical skills necessary for establishing a career path in the energy industry.
- Demonstrate the ability to solve technical problems using critical thinking and troubleshooting methods.
