Program Policies

The Paralegal Studies program at Westchester Community College is approved by the American Bar Association. According to the American Bar Association, “a legal assistant or paralegal is a person qualified by education, training, or work experience, who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work, for which the lawyer is responsible.” Paralegals are not licensed in New York State and always work under the supervision of an attorney. Paralegals may not provide legal services directly to the public, except as permitted by law.

Students enrolled in online programs must complete a portion of their legal specialty coursework of at least nine semester credits through synchronous instruction.

The program map is a recommended semester-by-semester schedule of courses based on degree requirements and serve as a general guideline to help students complete their program in two years.
