CHEM 205 - Organic Chemistry 2 (and Lab)

Continuation of CHEM 201 Organic Chemistry 1 (and Lab). Continuation of first semester’s in-depth study of organic compounds with a particular focus on the chemistry of aromatic, carbonyl, and nitrogen compounds. Areas of emphasis are placed on the nomenclature, bonding, reactivity, reaction mechanisms, synthesis, stereochemistry and spectroscopic (IR, UV, and NMR) analysis of organic compounds. Laboratory experiments build upon the experimental techniques learned in the first semester and feature more complex syntheses and methods for organic structure determination.

Notes: Organic Chemistry 2 is the second semester of a one-year (two-semester) comprehensive organic chemistry course designed for science or engineering majors transferring to a four-year college or for students fulfilling prerequisites for medical school or related programs.

Prerequisites: CHEM 201 Organic Chemistry 1 (and Lab) with a grade of “C” or higher.
