Programs of Study


Westchester Community College programs consist of General Education Courses  to ensure a well-rounded education to students within any program, and Degree Requirements, including courses specific to a particular degree. General Education Requirements vary based on degree type (A.A., A.S., A.A.S.), and may have course requirements based on specific Program of Study requirements.

Associate of Arts

The purpose of the Associate in Arts Degree (A.A.) is to build a foundation in a discipline, then continue to higher levels of education by transferring to a four-year institution. The requirements for the A.A. are equivalent to the first two years at an accredited four-year institution and emphasize the liberal arts and sciences, including coursework in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, and provides flexibility to pursue several careers.

Associate of Science

The purpose of the Associate in Science Degree (A.S.) is to build a foundation in a discipline, then continue to higher levels of education by transferring to a four-year institution. The requirements for the A.S. are equivalent to the first two years at an accredited four-year institution and balance coursework directly applicable to a clearly defined career path with the liberal arts & sciences.

Associate of Applied Science

The purpose of the Associate of Applied Science Degree (A.A.S.) is to prepare graduates for immediate employment upon graduation. The requirements combine specific career preparation with a firm foundation in the liberal arts and sciences. Although the A.A.S. is not intended as a transfer degree, graduates in some professions do transfer to baccalaureate-granting institutions.

Certificate

Certificate Programs prepare students for immediate employment in a variety of skilled occupations. Credits earned in a credit-bearing certificate will apply to parallel associate degrees offered at SUNY Westchester Community College.
