CE-COLGM 2029 - Zooming Along with Auguste Rodin

This semester we will explore the sculpture of Auguste Rodin (1840-1917), the creator of such iconic works as The Thinker, The Burghers of Calais, and The Gates of Hell. Considering both the evolution of his works and the venues devoted to them, we will Zoom to the Rodin Museum in Philadelphia, the Musée Rodin in Paris, and the Villa des Brillants in suburban Meudon. Several themes will guide our virtual tour: sculpture-making in late 19th-century France, Rodin’s status as a self-taught artist, the often-hostile reactions to his works, and his final emergence as a sculptor of global renown.
