Associate of Arts (A.A.) and Associate of Science (A.S.) Degrees Defined

The purpose of the A.A. and A.S. is to build a foundation in a discipline, then continue to higher levels of education by transferring to a four-year institution. The A.A. contains liberal arts credits; including coursework in the arts, humanities and social sciences, and provides flexibility to pursue several careers.  Conversely, coursework for the A.S. contains some liberal arts credits and coursework also directly applicable to a clearly defined career path. Program Description


The growing public interest in nutrition has greatly expanded job opportunities in the field of food, nutrition, and dietetics. Today, professionals in food service, dietetics are employed in a variety of settings: wellness and physical fitness centers, health care facilities, public health agencies, childcare centers, schools, food service industry, and as consultants.

The Associate in Science in Foods and Nutrition degree program, is a two-year program which upon completion, allows graduates to transfer to a four-year baccalaureate program in nutrition and/or dietetics with the ultimate goal of becoming a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist. The program combines the basics of nutrition care, food science/management, along with required science and liberal arts courses. The program is designed to align with the academic guidelines as defined by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Students interested in career in food service management, our 2-year program meets the academic qualifications set by the Association of Nutrition and Food Professionals (ANFP) for the national certification exam – Certified Dietary Manager.

To maximize success in transferring to a four-year institution, a minimum grade of “C” is needed in all courses. To transfer to a SUNY school, an additional course in American History, Western Civilization or another World Civilization course is required.

Program Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:

  1.  Demonstrate the ability to communicate nutrition information accurately and effectively.
  2.  Demonstrate the ability to provide comprehensive nutrition care based on accurate and complete assessment, careful planning and recognition of resource limitations.
  3.  Demonstrate the ability to use efficiently and effectively the techniques and tools for managing food service systems.

Program Note(s):


Continued enrollment in the Foods and Nutrition (Transfer) program requires the following:

  • A grade of C+ or better must be received in the following Nutrition Courses: NUTR 109 , NUTR 115 , NUTR 123 , and NUTR 206 
  • A grade of C or better must be received in the following Nutrition Courses: NUTR 118 , NUTR 120 , and NUTR 211  
  • Students must receive a grade of C or better in all required Science Courses: BIOL 115 , BIOL 121 , BIOL 123 , CHEM 107 , and CHEM 117  
  • Students must receive a grade of C or better in all required Math Courses: MATH 131  and MATH 140  
  • Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 during each semester.
  • A cumulative GPA of 2.3 is required for graduation.
  • Students will be allowed to repeat any nutrition course only once.
  • Students who do not meet the above criteria will receive notice of dismissal from the program.
  • Students may appeal the decision in writing through the Curriculum Chair. The appeal process mirrors Steps 2-4 of the Grade Appeal Process found in the Student Handbook.

Required Screening
Students admitted into this program must complete, at their own expense, a successful criminal background check and drug screening prior to beginning clinical courses. Please consult the curriculum chair of your program for additional details regarding the timetable and procedure for completing these requirements.
