Program Description

The Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities A.A. with a concentration in English at SUNY Westchester College offers students a dynamic foundation in writing, literature, and critical thinking. This program is designed for those with a passion for storytelling, analysis, and cultural studies, with courses that range from African American and Latin-American literature to Science Fiction and Creative Writing. Through this diverse curriculum, students sharpen their writing, analytical, and interpretive skills, preparing them for transfer to a four-year institution or careers in education, journalism, publishing, media, law, and more. This concentration encourages students to explore how language and literature shape and reflect the human experience across time and cultures.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities degree with a concentration in English, a graduate will:

Demonstrate knowledge of the methods and conventions in the field of English or Philosophy and at least one other Humanities discipline.
Demonstrate the ability to develop, research, and document analytical responses to one or more of the following: films, literary, or philosophical texts, works of art, musical compositions or performances, theatrical works.
Demonstrate the ability to produce clear, creative written expression of ideas.
Demonstrate the ability to determine distinctive features of a non-English speaking culture.
Demonstrate knowledge of the structure and vocabulary of a language outside of English.
