Program Description


The Health and Human Performance A.S. program at SUNY Westchester Community College provides a comprehensive foundation in health, fitness, and wellness, with pathways to further education or entry-level careers in this rapidly growing field. Through coursework in exercise physiology, kinesiology, fitness assessment, and nutrition, along with hands-on internships and certifications, students gain both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to support diverse populations in leading healthier lives. Graduates are well-prepared to transfer to four-year programs in fields like Exercise Science, Athletic Training, and Sports Studies or to pursue careers in fitness and wellness.

Program Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:

  1. Demonstrate competency in conducting acceptable physical assessment to include: body composition analysis, nutritional analysis, biomechanical analysis, and baseline aerobic & anaerobic testing.
  2. Demonstrate comprehension of the physiologic basis for exercise, and physical activity relating to physical fitness and athletic performance.
  3. Create and implement safe, goal-specific, effective exercise programs for multiple populations (special, masters, youth, gender-specific).
  4. Compare and contrast the impact (significance) of physical activity, movement, fitness, nutrition and exercise on health, performance, quality of life and disease prevention.
  5. Identify & discuss ethical issues faced by professionals who work in the healthcare, fitness & wellness industries.

Program Note


Students will be prepared/qualified to sit for the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) credentialing exam, which is conducted at the conclusion of the program, the fee for this exam is $199.00 and is the student’s responsibility.
