Program Description
The Associate in Science (AS) degree program in Health & Human Performance is an innovative program designed for students who are interested in the fields of health, fitness, and wellness. Coursework is focused in the essential areas of: Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Human Performance, Nutrition and Fitness, which provide both a strong foundation and great flexibility to students interested in transferring to a four-year college with health-, fitness-, and wellness-related degree programs including: Pre-Professional Programs, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Sports Medicine, Athletic Training, Sports Team Coaching, Physical Education Instruction, Personal Training, Sports Studies, Kinesiology, and Movement Science (to name a few). The Health and Human Performance program also provides students the opportunity to pursue entry-level careers in the rapidly growing, and dynamic fields of health, fitness, and wellness.
Included in this degree program is the opportunity to achieve several Certifications:
- Students may complete the Personal Trainer Certificate program; upon successful completion, students will obtain a Personal Training Certificate from Westchester Community College and have the option to obtain the personal training professional credential (CPT), by sitting for the national credentialing exam through the National Council on Strength & Fitness (NCSF).
- Lifeguard Certification through the American Red Cross.
- CPR/First Aid/AED Certification through the American Heart Association. Students will receive a two-year certification in BLS for Healthcare Providers and Heartsaver First Aid.
To maximize success in transferring to a four-year institution, a minimum grade of “C” is recommended in all courses.
Program Notes
Students will be prepared/qualified to sit for the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF) credentialing exam, which is conducted at the conclusion of the program, the fee for this exam is $199.00 and is the student’s responsibility.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:
- Demonstrate how to conduct acceptable physical assessment to include: body composition analysis, nutritional analysis, biomechanical analysis, and baseline aerobic & anaerobic testing.
- Demonstrate business, communication and writing skills necessary to work in a variety of fitness/wellness settings.
- Demonstrate comprehension of the physiologic basis for exercise, and physical activity relating to physical fitness and athletic performance.
- Create and implement safe, goal-specific, effective exercise programs for multiple populations (special, masters, youth, gender-specific).
- Compare and contrast the impact (significance) of physical activity, movement, fitness, nutrition and exercise on health, performance, quality of life and disease prevention.
- Identify & discuss ethical issues faced by professionals who work in the healthcare, fitness & wellness industries.

Although designed for full-time enrollment, these are easily adaptable for part-time study.
