Program Description

The Liberal Arts and Sciences: Social Sciences A.A. with a concentration in Sociology at SUNY Westchester Community College dives into the study of society, culture, and social inequalities. Students explore how social structures, power dynamics, and institutions impact individual lives and group interactions. Core courses like Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, and Urban Sociology provide a strong foundation for understanding complex social issues, while electives allow students to delve into specialized topics. This program is ideal for students interested in fields like social work, law, education, public policy, and non-profit work, and it prepares graduates to transfer smoothly to four-year sociology programs.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:

Demonstrate an understanding of key concepts and fundamental theoretical principles in at least three different social science disciplines, as well as the similarities and differences across disciplines.
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research methods used in the social sciences.
Demonstrate an understanding of the historical context of the development of the disciplines studied.
Demonstrate an understanding of the contemporary world and one’s place in it.
