The Health Information Management accreditor of SUNY Westchester is the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Program Description


The Health Information Technology A.A.S. program at SUNY Westchester Community College offers students a comprehensive online education in health information management, combining technical and practical skills essential for modern healthcare settings. This CAHIIM-accredited program prepares students to handle and protect patient data through coding, record management, and health care reimbursement. Graduates will be eligible for the RHIT certification and equipped to pursue careers in hospitals, clinics, insurance companies, and beyond. With flexible, online coursework and hands-on internship opportunities, this program meets the growing demand for skilled health information technologists.

Program Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of this program, a student will:

  1. Demonstrate competency in managing the revenue cycle and reimbursement 
  2. Explain the role of electronic health records and their use, framework, function, clinical terminology, meaningful use, access, HIPAA, security, integrity, storage of data, and destruction.
  3. Demonstrate competency in the use of research and data analytics to support decision-making.
  4. Demonstrate competency in managing electronic health records and use of technology to support administrative applications.
  5. Demonstrate competency in applying legal and ethical concepts to health information management.
  6. Demonstrate competency in organizational management within the healthcare delivery system. 
  7. Demonstrate competency in team leadership.
  8. Demonstrate competency in utilization of procedural grouping and diagnostic coding.

Program Note


  • Coursework for the Health Information Technology A.A.S. program is largely offered in the evening as a hybrid learning experience which blends online synchronous and asynchronous experiences.
  • The new A.A.S. has been developed to conform to the highest standards of the profession. The program will be pursuing accreditation from The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).
  • Upon successful completion of the Health Information Technology Program, the graduate will be eligible to take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) exam. With experience, the RHIT credential holds excellent potential for professional advancement.
  • Students must receive a grade of “C” or better in all Health Information Technology (HIT) courses to continue in the program and earn the degree.
